Eleven governments have made a bold new commitment to safeguard climate-resilient coral reefs, marking a major milestone in global conservation efforts. This landmark commitment is the result of collaborative leadership by the Government of Papua New Guinea, supported by the Wildlife Conservation Society, WWF, and The Nature Conservancy.
“We are proud to stand with Papua New Guinea as a global and regional leader in protecting our coral reefs,” said Rachel Sapery James, Lead of the Coral Reef Rescue Initiative (CRRI). “PNG’s pivotal role in fostering collaboration among Melanesian and Pacific leaders, and across the global CRRI network, is driving bold, united action. Together, we are safeguarding reef ecosystems and the communities who depend on them for generations to come.”
This commitment exemplifies the powerful intersection of science and political will, mobilising action to protect the reefs most likely to withstand the impacts of climate change.
As part of the Coral Reef Rescue Initiative, we look forward to deepening our partnerships and transforming this momentum into lasting, meaningful impact for both people and planet.
